The Reading Corner

Sunlight Streams through the window
Streaks of golden rays of the waning evening
Cascade down upon the reading corner
Silhouetting a young girl, wrapped in a worn blanket
Reading in the dying sun
All is silent except for her rhythmic breathing
And the flutter of pages turning
As soft as a dove's wing beat
Compared to the rest of the chaotic world
The reading corner is a standstill in time
A world of its own
Escaping the droning tasks of daily life
A sanctuary for this little lit lover
A place where she can envelope herself in print
The words seizing her imagination
Plot lines speeding and slowing her heart
Twists and turns that caught her breath
Dizzying yet satisfying
And as the story gets her to the moment
Of bursting with excitement
The real world hits her hear on
Shattering the fantasy realm of her book
Life grasping and yelling at her to return
Sighing, she marks her page and closes her book
Then unravels the blanket from her body and mind
She shivers in reality's inclement air
And walks away into the shadowy world
The rays of dying sunlight
Illuminating the reading corner
Where she will return to as always
To escape reality
And dive into fantasy
