Katie

I will never forget
The day I first laid eyes on you
Immediately I knew
My love would never end

You looked so frail, so small
So beautiful
Your dark eyes gazed
At the world around you
Dazed
Lost

You didn't know
What to make of me
Truthfully, I didn't know
What to make of you

Ours was a rough start
You took away my heart
But I couldn't run and hold you
As I longed to

So afraid
Cautious, guarded
We had to be

My eyes filled with tears
At the sight of you
So innocent, so sweet
I knew I'd give my life for you

You didn't have to trust me yet
You didn't have to love me yet
You didn't have to know me
And I didn't have to know you
For me to love you

There's nothing you could ever say
There's nothing you could ever do
There's nothing that could take
My heart away from you

I will never forget
The day you first reached out to me

They say you don't really feel
Like a parent
Until your child's fingers
Curl around your own
It's true

Though I was yours
I had to wait
For you to be mine

The day you took my hand
And asked me to play
You took my breath away

We raced around
On the playground
My heart soared

Your trust
Needed to be gained
And that day
Your trust you gave
My fear became failing you
Upon that day

I've done my best since, dear one
Though our life together
Has not been an easy one
A family
Is not blended easily

But I step up
"Stepmom" or not
My heart was not given contractually
That love could only come naturally

Natural parent or not
I'll always be here for you

Katie, you're my daughter now forever
Whatever anyone will say or do
Katie, we're forever family now
Katie, I love you!
