We spent years together
digging a hole as deep as the sky
and somehow when we reached the bottom
we knew exactly what it was for
so I tore your shadow from your shoulders
and you peeled mine away from my thighs
and we spent years again
burying them
until we could no longer hear their whispers
under all those layers of earth
and we walked in the sunlight
knowing comfort
knowing peace
as long as we were together
we would live in what we had built
far from what we had destroyed
there could be no more darkness
we had learned to leave it behind:
this is love
(this is only the beginning)
